The expressive power of parallelism
نویسنده
چکیده
We explore an algebraic language for networks consisting of a xed number of reactive units, communicating synchronously over a xed linking structure. The language has only two operators: disjoint parallelism, where two networks are composed in parallel without any interconnections, and linking, where an interconnec-tion is formed between two ports. The intention is that these operators correspond to the primitive steps when constructing networks, and that they therefore are conceptually simpler than the operators in existing process algebras. We investigate the expressive power of our language. The results are: (1) Deenability of behaviours: with only three simple processing units, every nite-state behaviour can be constructed. (2) Deenability of operators: we characterise the network operators which are deenable within the language; these turn out to include most operators previously suggested for describing parallelism. Our results hold for any congruence between trace equivalence and observation equivalence.

On the expressive power of first-order boolean functions in PCF
Recent results of Bucciarelli show that the semilattice of degrees of parallelism of firstorder boolean functions in PCF has both infinite chains and infinite antichains. By considering a simple subclass of Sieber’s sequentiality relations, we identify levels in the semilattice and derive inexpressibility results concerning functions on different levels. This allows us to further explore the st...
متن کاملTheoretical properties of functional Multi Layer Perceptrons
In this paper, we study a natural extension of Multi Layer Perceptrons (MLP) to functional inputs. We show that fundamental results for numerical MLP can be extended to functional MLP. We obtain universal approximation results that show the expressive power of functional MLP is comparable to the one of numerical MLP. We obtain consistency results which imply that optimal parameters estimation f...
متن کاملTime Delays in Membrane Systems and Petri Nets
Timing aspects in formalisms with explicit resources and parallelism are investigated, and it is presented a formal link between timed membrane systems and timed Petri nets with localities. For both formalisms, timing does not increase the expressive power; however both timed membrane systems and timed Petri nets are more flexible in describing molecular phenomena where time is a critical resou...
متن کاملParallelism and Tree Regular Constraints
Parallelism constraints are logical descriptions of trees. Parallelism constraints subsume dominance constraints and are equal in expressive power to context unification. Parallelism constraints belong to the constraint language for lambda structures (CLLS) which serves for modeling natural language semantics. In this paper, we investigate the extension of parallelism constraints by tree regula...
متن کاملA Study of the Role of Repetition of Music in the Nimayee Poems of Akhavan Sales
In this article, the aim of the authors is to study the role of repetition in creating music and parallelism in Nimayee poems in the three collections of poems by Mehdi Akhavan Sales: Zamestan, Akhere Shahname and Az Avesta. Accordingly, the researchers have investigated the various manners of repetition in creating parallelism in the poems at three levels: phonological parallelism, lexical par...
